Guitar Tablature

Featuring transcriptions of 164 different songs in 92 different tunings.

This archive of guitar transcriptions was originally conceived and designed by Sue McNamara. It has since evolved into a constantly growing project maintained collectively by Sue and fellow guitarists Marian Russell and Howard Wright (with special thanks to Mark Domyancich). Many other guitarists from around the world have contributed transcriptions as well.

But, how does Joni play it?
We make no claim that all the transcriptions in the database are exactly the way Joni plays them on her records - many are simply our own versions or interpretations.

However, there are those tabs that we've taken particular pains in attempting to "copy" what Joni has done. If you are interested in those transcriptions, look for these icons in your search results: Marian's: 'This tab is closest to the way Joni plays it' - Marian Russell Howard's: 'This tab is closest to the way Joni plays it' - Howard Wright Sue's: 'This tab is closest to the way Joni plays it' - Sue McNamara. Those indicate the respective guitarist's opinion of 'authentic' tabs.

[Listen to Sue tell the history of the site at JoniFest 2002: RealAudio|MP3]

If you would like to contribute to this archive, or if there is a transcription you would like to see that you don't find here, email the three of us. If you have questions about an individual transcription, contact the transcriber first. If that fails to get a response, we'd be happy to help.

(A number of Joni's tunings, although tuned to different pitches, have the same relative relationship between the strings. The "generic tuning" ignores the pitch and groups tunings with similar relationships. For a more detailed explanation, see the Tuning Patterns document.)
