Guitar File Formats

Most of the tabs on this site are available for viewing with your browser and in a "printer-friendly" format. A few other formats are used as well:

  PDF files

PDF stands for "portable document format" and is used widely on the web because of its flexibility and portability. Most computers already have software installed that will read this format. We use PDF files for scans of music notation (mainly the piano transcriptions) and scans of other non-text items. If you have trouble accessing a PDF file from this site, you can download free "Acrobat" software that will read the files.

TablEdit files (TEF)

TablEdit is a commonly-used tablature reading, writing, and playing software. It can be used for nearly all fretted stringed instruments. Although the full-featured software costs money, the company offers a free file reader at their website. [JMDL.com has no financial arrangement with nor interest in the TablEdit company]

MIDI files (MID)

MIDI stands for "musical instrument digital interface" and is actually a playable sound file. Nearly all computers have the ability to play these files. Often, they sound like cheesy representations of what an instrument might sound like - but on this site they will at least give you a taste of what the transcription is about.
